I’m excited to welcome Johannes Stange, a long-time friend and one of my most cherished collaborators on this episode.

Johannes is a rare archetype—a multi-hyphenate artist whose standards of excellence continue to inspire me over the years, but also a man who leads a life deeply connected to the land, running a boutique organic farm from his home base in Mannheim, Germany.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many gifted artists, but Johannes has always stood out for me particularly with his sensitivity and taste that bring a warmth and an authenticity to everything he does making him an incredibly enriching musician to work with.

In this conversation, we explore his early years from transcribing jazz solos in record stores to some deepdives into the delicate balance of navigating the incredible power of music with the inherent vulnerability it comes with as we grapple ongoing inner debates of self-doubt and 'being enough'.

Indian-German Producer/Singer-Songwriter T.L. Mazumdar grew up on 3 continents and 4 countries.

Mentored by a series of iconic musicians like Kenny Werner, Kai Eckhardt, Dr John Matthias, and the late Gary Barone, his artistic journey has aptly been described by Rolling Stone magazine as one that ‘...personifies multiculturalism’.

Time Out Mumbai has referred to him as ‘’...amongst a handful of Indian (origin) musicians who don't have to play sitars or tablas''

He has been nominated for German Music awards
Bremer Jazzpreis and Future Sounds Jazz Award, and been called ''...a major talent'' by Jack Douglas (Producer: John Lennon, Miles Davis, etc.). .

Johannes Stange

Musician/Founder

Multi-hyphenate artist/educator and organic farmer Johannes Stange began playing the trumpet at the age of seven.

After receiving a classical education, he completed a Bachelor's degree in jazz trumpet under Prof. Stephan Zimmermann at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts from 2007 to 2012, going on to pursue a Master's degree in jazz composition under Prof. Jürgen Friedrich.

His performances inclue stints with the German National Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) and he is the founder and MD of the Tangojazz Orchestra GOZO and the Oldtime Jazz Ensemble Little Vintage Orchestra.

He is also a founding member of the Oriental Jazz Ensemble LebiDerya.

In 2017, the trumpeter was awarded a scholarship from the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation.
Johannes Stange lives in Mannheim, where he works as a trumpeter, arranger, and composer and runs a boutique organic farm.
