Iconic British-Asian Singer/Author/Coach Sheila Chandra speaks to T.L. Mazumdar
''Real World Records are delighted to announce the re-issue of a British Asian World Music pioneer Sheila Chandra’s landmark trilogy of solo voice albums on 16th June. These austerely beautiful records forged a new global vocal vision out of a re-imagining of myriad vocal traditions - and sound just as radical and passionate now, as they did when they were first released, 30 years ago''. - Press Release, Real World Records.
This episode is about the reissue of a piece of musical history that is irrefutably timeless in the way it sounds, in the standards of sheer artistic quality, integrity, and production ethic it set, and irrefutably relevant in its socio-cultural implications decades later.
It is the story of the journey of a 16-year-old British-Asian girl that began with what essentially changed the inherent perception of diasporic South Asian culture, even while caught in between a crossfire backed by the extraordinarily heavy artillery of a colonial hangover and the archaic demands of an ancestral community sore from the trauma of blatant racism, all amidst the inherent white spaces of a music industry that let the first South Asian woman reach the international charts by the sheer coincidence of a faceless demo-tape.
This is the story of how the official first chapter of what went on to be labeled 'World Music' began.
In this 2 hour conversation, we revisit this entire journey and the significance it still owns in the current zeitgeist, with the lens of the older, mature, Sheila Chandra who works today as an exceptionally astute and respected artist-coach and author, after health constraints forced her to leave a performing career as ''one of the most innovative, provocative singers in any genre'' (Billboard Music).

Unable to make music any longer, Chandra regards them as the pinnacle of her creative career. (More https://realworldrecords.com/news/classic-sheila-chandra-trilogy-set-for-re-issue/)
